Judy Koonce ("The old lady")
Judy has always been very active, participating in team sports through high
school and college. She began running in 1983 when she saw a flyer for a 5
mile race on Mt. Tabor. In 1992, motivated by being in her 50's, she
started training to walk in her first Portland Marathon, and has done 10 so
far. A few years later, she had the opportunity to co-captain an "Old Lady"
relay team, of which she soon became captain. Judy has been the captain of
the "Vintage Whine Walkers" for 10 years now, leading her team in up to 4
relays a year. With the help of her team, she organizes the Packet Pick-up
for WVR and spends many goofy hours verifying the distances and route of the
relay. Judy enjoys the community, camaraderie and the competition walking has
brought her. She likes to see how far she can push herself, and often opts
to take on new ventures "just because".
