5 Tips for a Healthy Heart and Brain

As we maneuver the Coronavirus recommendations, it’s good to focus on other aspects of taking care.
When you thinking about staying healthy & fit, are you generally thinking from the neck down?

The health of your brain plays a critical role in almost everything you do: thinking, feeling, remembering, working, playing - and even sleeping.

One key to slowing aging in your brain is to keep your heart healthy.

Research is showing our brains benefit from exercise as well as our hearts. Dr. Waneen Spirduso, author of Exercise and Its Mediating Effects on Cognition, offers that exercise improves mental functions such as recall, learning and abstract reasoning. Exercise may even help prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease and dementia as exercise impacts brain shrinkage.

No one is more enthusiastic about the neurological benefits of exercise than Harvard University professor and psychiatrist John Ratey, author of Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. In a Los Angeles Times article, Ratey claims that aerobic exercise can delay cognitive decline by as much as seven to 10 years. Furthermore, because "exercise creates neuron growth," Ratey calls exercise "Miracle-Gro for the brain." He believes that exercise is the single best tool we have for keeping our brain functioning at its highest level.

5 Tips for a healthy heart and brain are:

Stay physically active -- exercise nearly daily for 30 minutes. 150 minutes moderate intensity or 75 minutes high intensity. I enjoy going for walks 2 or 3 times a day.

Adopt a  healthy heart / brain diet -- High Fat Food Can Lead to Brain Scarring (avoid processed high fat foods and get enough healthy fats in the form of nuts, seeds, and avocados). Have you considered a plant based focused diet?

Remain socially active—How are you approaching social interactions?

Stay mentally active – What methods do you use for staying mentally active?
